Diploma Theme
I'm going to study the subject of Support as my Diploma theme. I'm going to concentrate on studying means of support in the garden. The diagram below shows some aspects of support in the garden that could be studied. I think that the study of support structures could provide much inspiration for embroidery especially in the application of construction techniques.
The following list highlights some potential areas for study:
How plants support themselves:
- stems
- roots
- tendrils
How plants are supported:
- fences
- bamboo canes
- trellis
- string
- wire
- commercial supports
- knots and twists
Plants as supports:
- leaves
- flowers
- buds
- spider webs
Support construction:
- plant cell biology
- shape
- cross beams
- strength
When support breaks down:
- seasons
- lack of water
- change of colour
- rotting wood
- crumbling concrete
Other Studies could include:
- recording through the seasons how a climbing plant covers a trellis
- recording the effects of the weather and seasons on plant stems
- Comparing different plant stems
- Comparing two plants, one supported and the other left in a natural state.
Resources
Resources that could be used: leaves, petals, seed heads, gardening books and magazines, materials such as netting, twine and cane, seed packets.
EXPANDING THE THEME
Other Means of Support
The theme could be expanded to include other areas as support. Buildings and the building process, bridges, and even some clothes provide support. The study could include birds, which even when flying and seem to have no visible means of support are supported by air pressure.
Garden Support as a Metaphor for Other Issues
The features of support in the garden could be used to explore wider issues of support such as environmental issues, social support and human relationships.
